Salaried Judges of the First-tier Tribunal – Immigration and Asylum Chamber

Registration is closed for this event

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in February 2023 to recruit Judges of the First-Tier Tribunal and this will include 29 posts in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC) and a number of posts in the Health and Social Care Chamber, Social Entitlement Chamber, and Property Chamber.

An online seminar will take place via Microsoft Teams on Thursday 9 February at 5pm -6pm for those interested in applying for appointment as Judge of the First-Tier Tribunal in the IAC.

The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up to date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process.  You will hear from Tribunal Judge Thaira Bibi and Tribunal Judge Paul Shaerf and a representative from the JAC.

This seminar is organised on behalf of the Judicial Diversity Committee to assist implementation of the Judicial Diversity and Inclusion Strategy

Who should attend?

Candidates are expected to have previous judicial experience, sitting as a judge in a salaried or fee-paid capacity or a similar role such as the chair of an equivalent body for which a legal qualification is required.

An equivalent body is one of a quasi-judicial nature for which the powers and procedures should resemble those of a court of law and involve highly complex matters, requiring its members objectively to determine the facts and draw conclusions to reach a reasoned decision.  Such decisions could result in the imposition of a penalty, and they are likely to affect the legal rights, duties or privileges of specific parties.  Examples could include, but are not restricted to:

  • Coroner
  • Disciplinary tribunals and conduct hearings for professional standards bodies
  • Arbitration
  • Parole Board
  • Chair of a statutory inquiry
