 Commission</a> (JAC) will be launching <u><strong>
 two</strong></u> selection exercise campaigns in t
 he summer to recruit 50 Fee-paid Specialist Member
 s assigned to the First-tier Tribunal\, Health\, E
 ducation and Social Care Chamber – 25 will be assi
 gned to Mental Health (MH) and 25 assigned to Spec
 ial Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). </p>\
 n \n <p><u><strong>The seminar</strong></u><br />\
 n The Judicial Office is organising a <u>joint</u>
  pre-application seminar for both MH and SEND. The
  pre-application seminar is for those interested i
 n applying for either or both roles. The joint sem
 inar will take place online via Microsoft Teams on
  <strong>Wednesday 13th May (5-6PM)</strong>. </p>
 \n \n <p>The seminar aims to help applicants be be
 tter prepared to make an application and to receiv
 e up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s sele
 ction process. As well as a JAC representative\, y
 ou will also hear from the Deputy Chamber Presiden
 ts and two Specialist Members\, one from Mental He
 alth and one from Special Educational Needs and Di
 sability. </p>\n \n <p><u><strong>Who should atten
 d?</strong></u><br />\n You will hear more about t
 he eligibility criteria at the session but to be c
 onsidered for an MH role you will need to demonstr
 ate knowledge in mental illness/mental disorders a
 nd to be considered for a SEND role you will need 
 substantial experience of special educational need
 s and/or disability.</p>\n \n <p>Applications are 
 particularly welcome from under-represented groups
  (women\, ethnic minority candidates and disabled 
 candidates). Training is provided for all appointe

 ong>What does a specialist lay member do? </strong
 ></u><br />\n The duties of a specialist member in
 clude reading and digesting a number of reports (i
 n advance of the hearing) and attending a pre-hear
 ing discussion about the issues to be determined w
 ith the panel on the day of the hearing.</p>\n \n 
 <p>Also\, to participate fully in the deliberation
 s and decision-making process after the hearing ha
 s concluded. This includes contributing to the dra
 fting of the decision\, and responding promptly wi
 th comments\, using secure email when the judge se
 eks observations on a draft decision.</p>\n \n <p>
