The Judici al Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launc hing a selection exercise in October to identify 1 30 candidates (this is anticipated to be 80 immedi ate and 50 future appointments) for the post of De puty District Judge.

The se minar
\n The Judicial Office is organis ing a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Tuesday 6th October 2026 (5pm to 6.15pm). 

\n \n

The seminar aims to help applicants be better p repared to make an application and to receive up-t o-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. As well as the JAC\, you will also hear f rom leadership judges and serving Deputy District Judges. 

\n \n

Who should attend?
\n The exercise will be open to barristers\, solicitors\, and Fellows of CILEX. P lease note\, in order to meet the statutory qualif ications for appointment\, a solicitor (or a salar ied judicial office holder who was formerly a soli citor) must appear on the Roll. 

\n \n

Appli cations are particularly welcome from under-repres ented groups (women\, ethnic minority candidates\, disabled candidates\, or those with a solicitor b ackground).

What does a De puty District Judge do?

\n \n

D eputy District Judges hear a variety of civil and family cases\, ranging from trials lasting a numbe r of days to shorter interlocutory and case manage ment applications. The bulk of a Deputy District J udge's work\, however\, involves hearing lists com posed of several short hearings each day. Deputy D istrict Judges must be able to deal effectively wi th face-to-face and remote hearings\, and applicat ions made electronically or on paper. Vacancies wi ll be across England and Wales.
