Judge of the First-tier Tribunal: Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC) Pre-Application Seminar 2024
The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in mid-October to recruit Salaried First-tier Tribunal Judges.
This pre-application seminar is aimed at candidates interested in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC).
The seminar
The Judicial Office is organising a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 2 October 2024 (5-6pm).
The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. As well as the JAC, you will also hear from the Chamber President and serving Tribunal Judges.
Who should attend?
Applications are invited from solicitors qualified in England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, barristers in England and Wales or Northern Ireland, advocates in Scotland, and Fellows of the Chartered institute of Legal Executives. Candidates must have 5 years post qualification legal experience and are expected to have at least 30 sitting days as a judge or in a quasi-judicial capacity.
Applications are particularly welcome from under-represented groups (women, ethnic minority candidates, disabled candidates and solicitors).
Training is provided for all appointed.

Welcome to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) (‘FTTIAC’).
We deal with appeals against decisions made by the Home Office relating to entry clearance, permission to stay and removal from the UK, centred upon human rights and international protection. We also deal with immigration bail. It is a very interesting and dynamic area of law dealing with vulnerable individuals who come from different cultures, backgrounds and experiences. A salaried judge routinely sits on their own. We warmly welcome applications from eligible candidates from the widest possible range of professional and personal backgrounds to add to the wide diversity of the FTTIAC judiciary. Previous experience in immigration and asylum law is not a requirement or expected. We have a number of judges who have excelled without any such history. Full training and mentoring will be provided for all successful candidates with the emphasis on continued peer support, team building and development to promote collegiality and career ambitions.
Please note that although the Judicial Office will be running the pre-application seminar, the actual recruitment campaign is being done and led by the Judicial Appointments Commission.
