Deputy District Judge Pre-Application Seminar 2022
The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in September 2022, to recruit Deputy District Judges.
The seminar
This seminar is organised by Judicial Office on behalf of the Judicial Diversity Committee to assist with implementation of the Judicial Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
The seminar will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Thursday 8 September at 5pm – 6pm for those interested in applying for appointment.
The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. You will also hear from serving Deputy District Judges and a representative for the JAC.
Who should attend?
All lawyers and judicial office holders interested in applying for a DDJ role can attend. Applications are particularly welcome from under-represented groups.
5 years’ legal post qualification experience is needed for those seeking appointment to the role through the JAC’s selection exercise.
Deputy District Judges are appointed by the Lord Chancellor after a fair and open competition administered by the JAC, and the statutory qualification is the same as that for appointment as a District Judge – a minimum of five years’ right of audience in any part of the Supreme Court, or all proceedings in county courts or magistrates’ courts.
Deputy District Judges (DDJ) sit on a fee-paid basis in the county courts and district registries of the High Court. As a DDJ you will usually be required to make yourself available for 30 sitting days a year. This figure may vary in accordance with business needs and change from time to time. In general, the jurisdiction is the same as that of a District Judge.
