Upper Tribunal Tax and Chancery; Deputy Judges – roles in Financial Services or Tax: Pre-Application seminar 2026

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in July to recruit 5 Upper Tribunal Tax and Chancery Deputy Judges.

The seminar

The Judicial Office is organising a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 20th May 2026 (5.30-6.30pm).

The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. As well as the JAC, you will also hear from the Chamber President, Mr Justice Nicholas Thompsell and two serving deputy judges.

Who should attend?

Applications are invited from candidates with at least 7 years’ post qualification legal experience and at least 4 years’ experience in either tax or financial services. Applications are particularly welcome from under-represented groups (women, ethnic minority candidates, disabled candidates).

The Tax and Chancery Chamber of the Upper Tribunal exercises appellate and judicial review functions in relation to tax matters. The majority of this work is in deciding appeals on points of law from the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber). It also deals with several first instance jurisdictions, principally financial services regulation, where it hears references against decisions of the Financial Conduct Authority and the Pensions Regulator.
