Deputy Master, Business and Property Division- Pre-Application Seminar 2026

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) will be launching a selection exercise in November to recruit 4 Deputy Masters.

Deputy Masters of the Business & Property Division are based at the Rolls Building in London and are part of the second tier judiciary in the High Court. They are responsible for exercising the jurisdiction of the Business and Property Division where that jurisdiction is not exercised by a High Court Judge, other than where the jurisdiction is reserved (such as the Financial List and the Patents Court).

Deputy Masters manage and hear cases in the Business List, the Competition List, the Intellectual Property List and the Property Trusts and Probate List. The work is often complex and challenging. It includes a substantial amount of business and commercial litigation, some of which has a foreign element. Other work includes professional negligence claims, IP claims such as trademarks and passing off, claims relating to real property, will disputes, probate and trust work, pension claims, competition law.

The seminar
The Judicial Office is organising a pre-application seminar that will take place online via Microsoft Teams or in-person on Tuesday 17th November 2026 (5-6pm).

The seminar aims to help applicants be better prepared to make an application and to receive up-to-date guidance and advice on the JAC’s selection process. As well as the JAC, you will also hear from serving Masters in the Division.

Who should attend?
It is essential that candidates applying for this post have relevant knowledge and experience in Business and Property work.
