Appointment of a High Court Judge: Richard Smith

The King is pleased to approve the appointment of a Justice of the High Court. This appointment will take effect from 20 February 2023. It is anticipated that further appointments will be announced.

The candidate approved as a High Court Judge is Richard Smith.

This appointment will fill a vacancy in the High Court following elevations to the Court of Appeal and confirmed retirements. For further information regarding the number of applicants and number of recommended candidates, please see the Judicial Appointments Commission website:

Richard Smith

Richard Smith will be known as The Honourable Mr Justice Richard Smith. He was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 1994. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2018 and as a Deputy High Court Judge assigned to the Chancery and King’s Bench Divisions in 2019.

He will take up appointment on 20 February 2023.

The Lord Chief Justice will assign Richard Smith to the Chancery Division.
