Judge Duncan Maccallum Birrell retires with effect from 1 July 2023.
Background information
Judge Birrell was called to the Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1984. He was appointed a Legal Member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal in 2003 and a Deputy District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts) in 2005. He was appointed a Judge of the First-tier Tribunal (Health, Education and Social Care Chamber) in 2012 and was a Diversity and Community Relations Judge from 2012 to 2023.
